COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Democrats have elected a new chairman. The party selected Orangeburg native Jaime Harrison,37, as its new leader at Saturday's convention in Columbia.

Harrison told delegates they can challenge Republicans in South Carolina, but they first must get their own house together. He promised a 46 county strategy to make sure party members all over the state get the training and resources to win elections.

Harrison is the first African American to run a major party in South Carolina.

Harrison replaces Dick Harpootlian, who did not run again. Harrison is a former executive director of the U.S. House Democratic Caucus and was first vice chairman of the state Democratic Party.

Events kicked off Friday with a speech from Vice President Joe Biden at the party's Jefferson Jackson dinner.
