Columbia, SC (WLTX) --- Senior catcher Shelby Gonzalez made her final game at Carolina Stadium a memorable one. Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning, Gonzalez hit a two-run home run that would give South Carolina a 2-1 lead and eventual win over the second ranked Florida Gators.
The homer kept the SEC tournament hopes alive for the Gamecocks. Katie Marks earned the win with her work in relief.
South Carolina's win snaps a 28-game losing streak to Florida that dated back to the 2003. It's the first win over a top-two foe since May 19, 2003, when the Gamecocks forced an if-necessary game against No. 1 UCLA in NCAA Regional play at Beckham Field.
They'll find out the playoff fate at the conclusion of SEC play Sunday.
