YEMASSEE, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating why a passenger tumbled out of a moving car on Interstate 95 and died after landing in front of a tractor-trailer.
Troopers say the fatal incident happened Sunday evening near the Jasper County community of Yemassee. Southbound traffic on I-95 was rerouted for almost three hours.
Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres says the female passenger was riding in a southbound 1993 Buick 4-door driven by a 58-year-old Savannah, Ga., man. Beres says the unidentified female came out of the moving car and was struck and killed by a Freightliner tractor-trailer headed southbound in the next lane.
The patrol didn't release the passenger's age and other information.
