Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A Midlands veteran says the Dorn VA Hospital sent medical records for three other hospital patients to her in a notice about an appointment with a specialist.
"The VA sent me the information on the outside doctor," said Navy veteran Wendy Thomas. "Then I looked down at the bottom and it was somebody else's name, somebody else's Social Security number."
Records for three different veterans showed up on four different pages. Thomas knew the records didn't belong to her after she read the listed procedures.
"Some of that stuff was really personal," said Thomas. "Cornea transplants and all kinds of stuff like that these people were having. I was like 'Oh my God. How could they make a mistake like that?'"
Now Thomas wonders if her medical history could be in the wrong hands.
"No I don't want anybody knowing my information because I don't want anyone knowing how sick I am," she said.
The Dorn VA has contacted the three veterans whose information was compromised and offered them free credit monitoring service.
The hospital said in a statement Wednesday afternoon, "We will thoroughly review our processes for handling patient information, including reviewing procedures used in mailing out appointment letters, to prevent an incident like this happening in the future."
