Columbia, SC (WLTX)- One man is dead and one in custody after a motorcyclist was hit by a vehicle according to Columbia Police Officials.
The victim identified as John E. Sparrow, 49, of Hopkins, SC. The vehicle that hit Sparrow was driven by Troy Labrente Wilson, 26, of Columbia, initially fled the scene but later returned. It was then determined that he was under the influence of alcohol at which point he was apprehended.
The incident began when the motorcycle was traveling northbound on Hazelwood Rd., Wilson was traveling southbound on Hazelwood Rd., Wilson attempted to make a left turn to head east on Burdell Drive, failed to yield the right of way causing the motorcycle to strike the right front passenger door of the vehicle.
The driver of the motorcycle was transported to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital where he was pronounced deceased as a result of his injuries.
Wilson is charged with, Felony DUI Involving Death, Hit and Run Involving Death, Driving Under Suspension (DUS) 2nd, Seatbelt Violation, Failure to Render Aid, Open Container Motor Vehicle and Possession with Intent to Distribute (PWID) Marijuana.
This is CPD's first alcohol-related death of 2013.
