Saluda County, SC (WLTX) - A teenager died on Lake Murray Sunday, just moments after jumping into the water.
The Saluda County Coroner's office identified the victim as 17-year-old Millard Waeland Peeples.
Officials say Peeples was out on Lake Murray swimming in an area of water that was about 12 feet deep when something went wrong. Emergency crews were called to the scene around 4:45 p.m., and recovered Peeples' body around Riverbend Point near Saluda.
Friends say the teen was a strong swimmer.
News19 has learned the victim's parents were both serving in Afghanistan with the National Guard. They have been notified of his death, and are on the way back to the United States.
The boy had been staying with his grandmother while his parents were overseas. We're told the boy's brother was set to deploy as well.
Peeples served in the junior ROTC at his high school, and also played in the school band.
