Columbia, SC (WLTX) - It's summertime, which means spending more time outdoors at the pool, the park, and in the backyard with friends and family. But how do you ensure that unwelcome guests, like mosquitoes, stay far away from the fun?
We asked News19 viewers on our Facebook page how they keep those pesky mosquitoes away.
Many recommended "traditional" home remedies, such as dryer sheets, citronella oils and Vitamin B. Other suggestions included using Listerine in a spray bottle, mixing vanilla extract and baby oil, or planting mosquito repelling plants such as Catnip, Marigold, Horsemint or Citronella. One viewer even said that he uses a bic lighter, hairspray, and his Apache war cry. (However, we do not suggest this.)
Perhaps you don't want to just repel the mosquitoes, but you want to catch them once and for all. Here's how to create your very own homemade mosquito trap.
1 empty 2-liter bottle
1 cup of hot water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 teaspoon of yeast
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water into the bottom half of the bottle. Let the mixture cool.
3. Add yeast.
4. Place top half of the bottle upside down into the other half, secure with black electrical tape.
5. Place the trap away from your gathering area. Replace the mixture every 2 weeks.
If you don't want to go the home remedy route, there are plenty of bug repellent products available in stores too. Several viewers recommend "Avon Skin So Soft," or purchasing a Thermacell.
