Richland County, SC (WLTX) - Richland County deputies are accusing a mother and father of killing their four-year-old child.
Officers arrested 28-year-old Robert Antonio Guinyard and 25-year-old Courtney Shante Thompson and charged them with homicide by child abuse and unlawful conduct toward a child.
Deputies say around 6 p.m. Monday, they responded to a home on Beaverbrook Road in Columbia of a suspicious death of a four-year-old boy. After conducting an investigation, officers concluded that the mother and father were responsible.
Deputy Curtis Wilson says his agency's probe shows that Guinyard was home with the child while Thompson was at work.
He says it appears the child was beaten throughout the day, and when his mother came home, she did nothing to help the child.
Wilson says she went to take a shower and the beating continued, and she eventually reported hearing a thud.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts concluded that the child died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head and body.
"This is a horrific case of a mother and father killing their own flesh and blood," said Sheriff Leon Lott in a statement.
A newborn that was at the house at the time of the incident was taken into protective custody, and according to the Sheriff's statement, five other children were with various family members at that time.
