Lexington County, SC (WLTX) - Lexington County deputies have arrested a man they say ran over and killed his girlfriend with an SUV on July 4th.
Officers have charged Charlie Austin Roof, 45, with felony driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs that results in death.
Officers say on Thursday, Roof and his girlfriend, 49-year-old Mary Jane Tucker, were at a house on Decie Road visiting Tucker's relatives. Witnesses told officers that at some point during the visit, Roof sped away from the home driving Tucker's SUV while she was a passenger in the vehicle.
Deputies aren't sure what happened next, but Tucker wound up outside her vehicle and was run over by the SUV.
When deputies arrived, they say they found Roof standing over her body. Emergency officials pronounced Tucker dead at the scene.
Deputies say Roof told them the two had been drinking, and that they'd got into a verbal fight.
Officers say Roof performed poorly on field sobriety tests. Blood tests were done to determine if he'd consumed alcohol; those results are expected back at a later date.
Deputies are still investigating the circumstances leading up to the death. Roof is behind held on $200,000 bond.
