Lexington County, SC (WLTX)- Lexington County Sheriff's Department and Lexington Police Department detectives are seeking help from citizens in identifying as many as five men who have committed six robberies at five convenience stores that are open 24 hours a day on Augusta Road and Sunset Boulevard in the Lexington and West Columbia communities.

The first robbery occurred on May 23. The most recent robbery occurred on Friday, July 12.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts and Lexington Police Chief Terrence Green said between two and five men, all of whom are African-Americans, robbed the convenience stores between 12 and 6 am.

In each robbery, the men covered their faces with cloths or masks in order to conceal their identities. The men ran in the stores, forced clerks to open cash registers and stole an undetermined amount of money, tobacco products and beer before driving off.

Detectives also are seeking help in locating or obtaining information about two motor vehicles that might be connected to the convenience store robberies or might have been driven by someone who witnessed the robberies.

One vehicle is a light colored, four-door sedan, possibly a Toyota sedan or Chevrolet sedan, Metts and Green said. The sedan has tinted windows, and there are no hubcaps on the passenger's side of the vehicle.

The second vehicle is a burgundy or red four-door sedan, possibly a Honda Civic or Buick Century. The vehicle's passenger's side mirror is damaged.

Metts and Green said the robberies occurred at a Pitt Stop convenience store at Sunset Boulevard on May 23 and May 28, a Hess Express convenience store on Augusta Road on June 20, a Circle K convenience store on Augusta Road on June 23, a Kangaroo Express convenience store on Augusta Road on July 8 and a Murphy Express convenience store also on Augusta Road on July 12.

In the early morning hours on July 12, four men entered the Murphy Express convenience store at on Augusta Road in the Town of Lexington, Green said. The men forced the clerk at the store to open cash registers. The men stole money, cigarettes and beer. The men fled on foot towards Dooley Road, where detectives think that the men had parked a motor vehicle. Each of the men was wearing a mask or cloth on his face in order to conceal his identity.

Metts and Green asked anyone with information about the convenience store robberies or the men who robbed the stores to call the Lexington County Sheriff's Department at (803) 785-8230, the Lexington Police Department at (803) 359-6260 or CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC
