Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The State Law Enforcement Division has opened an investigation into the Columbia Police Department.
SLED spokesman Thom Berry said Tuesday the probe came after a request from Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago and the Fifth Circuit Solicitor's Office.
It's unclear what the investigation is looking into. However, Monday, City Manager Teresa Wilson fired a captain with the police department, saying he violated city policy. Previous Coverage: Columbia Police Captain Fired
Wilson said Captain Dave Navarro admitted to recording a conversation between himself and Santiago, and also shredding city documents. Columbia police said they were looking into why the documents were destroyed.
Navarro's lawyer issued an affidavit claiming the captain was asked to help frame a city official, and was fired after not going along with the plan.
Navarro served with CPD for over two years and was most recently the captain of community services.
