Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police say one of their officers shot a suspect after the suspect attacked the cop.
The incident took place Thursday afternoon on Woodridge Drive.
According to police, the officer was responding to a report of a fight in the area. Officers say one of the people fighting then hit the officer in the head with an object. Investigators say the officer responded by pulling out his baton, and sprayed the suspect with pepper spray.
The suspect didn't stop, police say, so the officer took out his gun and shot him in the lower body.
The suspect and the officer were taken to the hospital. Police say their officer is okay, and the suspect's injuries are said to be non life-threatening.
As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
