Orangeburg, SC (WLTX) -- What was supposed to be a quick overnight stay in the Midlands became much more for a Florida man as his van and trailer went missing.

Antique dealer Michael Whittemore stopped in Orangeburg to rest before making the rest of his trip, just like he has done numerous times.

Whittemore said, "I was headed up to New England to do one of my biggest shows of the year."

However, when Whittemore stepped out of the Country Inn and Suites in Orangeburg early Tuesday morning he found out something was missing.

"I came into disbelief, I just said where is my van and trailer, I almost went into total shock," said Whittemore.

His white Ford van along with a white 16-foot Covered Wagon trailer was missing, but he says it is the stuff on the inside that is much more important.

Whittemore said, "Mostly what we call early American, New England furniture, folk art, paintings, vintage garden items, weathervanes, basically one of the kind type things."

He says he did everything possible to keep his stuff safe, but that still was not enough.

"It is scary that it is come to this point that someone has taken all of this I have worked so hard for away from me and it is almost impossible to replace or recoup what I have lost," said Whittemore.

Now he is hopeful that someone out there saw something that may help him get back part of his livelihood.

Whittemore said, "All I want back is the stuff, vans are replaceable, trailers are replaceable, but these things are one of kind."

The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Department is investigating, if you have any information that can help, please call Crimestoppers.
