Columbia, SC (WLTX) - The downtown Columbia IHOP is gone--but not for long.
Construction crews used bulldozers to tear down the Assembly Street restaurant Wednesday.
The store was built in 1968, and is well-known as a late night hangout for people enjoying the nightlife in Columbia' s Vista.
IHOP spokesman Craig Hoffman says a new store will be built on the location, and is expected to open in December of 2013.
The new building will be much larger, with a capacity of 170 customers, compared to 100 in the old place. The new store will also have an outdoor patio and easier parking.
It's estimated the store will also employ an additional 30 people.
