Sumter, SC (WLTX) - A Sumter kindergartner was mistakenly labeled as a walker and wandered off of school property this week.
The little girl goes to Crosswell Drive Elementary.
A representative with the school district says at the end of the day when the children were split up into groups for bus riders, car riders, daycare and walkers, the little girl wandered into the "walkers" line.
She was supposed to ride the bus to Warth child development facility. They say the child was not wearing the tag indicating she was supposed to be in daycare.
The Sumter Count Sheriff's Deputy who found the little girl said she was running down 300 block of Church Street, a little less than a mile away from the school. The deputy called the Sumter Police Department to assist and the child's mother was contacted. A day care worker picked the child up soon after.
The district says that now, grade level teachers will chaperone the students from their departure points. The principal did speak with the teachers involved and contacted the child's mother.
