Bus Crash Involving Sumter Football Team

Sumter, SC(WLTX)- Sumter County Fire and Rescue responded to a school bus motor vehicle accident Saturday afternoon.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the activity bus was leaving a football scrimmage at Hillcrest stadium, while traveling on Highway 521, the bus veered off the roadway and struck a tree.

Sumter School District Public Information Officer, Shelly Galloway says 35 Alice Drive Middle School 8th graders were traveling from a scrimmage, 26 students and one driver were transported to the hospital.  All of the injuries were non-life threatening, and all but one student has been released.

The bus was driven by the coach, Billy Ray Geddings.
Geddings was also transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident is being investigated by the SC Highway Patrol.
