Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says a Benedict College student found dead on campus earlier this week died during childbirth.
Watts released information on the death of the student Thursday morning. Previous Coverage: Benedict Released Statement on Student's Death | Coroner: Body Found on Benedict College Campus Later in the day, the school confirmed the woman's name as 19-year-old Ayaanah Gibson.
She was found in her dorm room Tuesday. Watts says she was 32 weeks pregnant, and that she likely gave birth Saturday afternoon or early Sunday morning.
Watts confirmed that the woman died from a loss of blood while delivering a stillborn fetus.
The coroner told the Associated Press that the woman likely would have survived if she sought medical help, but he doesn't know why she didn't call 911.
