Charleston, SC (WLTX) - The Medical University of South Carolina says they have fallen victim to cyber theft, a problem that's compromised the credit card information of almost 7,000 people.
A MUSC spokesperson said a credit card processing vendor notified the school on Aug. 22 about the hack, which occurred between June 30 and Aug. 21. The hack affected people who used a credit card online or over the telephone to pay for healthcare services.
MUSC immediately suspended their online account when they were notified of the breach.
Officials do not believe anyone's medical record information was accessed during the theft.
An MUSC-based call center will help confirm whether a person was a victim of this information theft and if necessary, will provide confirmed victims with additional information regarding the credit monitoring service. The hospital says more information is available on the its website (www.musc.edu/cyberinfo). The number for the MUSC call center is 843-792-6200 or toll free 1-800-868-5051.
