Newberry County, SC (WLTX)- A Newberry High School student was killed by a train Saturday evening according to the Newberry County Police Department.
The incident occurred Saturday in the City of Newberry. Newberry County Coroner, Craig Newton indicated that Chamone A. McGraw, 16 years of age, was killed instantly after being struck by a northbound CSX train near Cline St.
The accident occurred just after 6pm as McGraw was walking Southbound on the railroad tracks. Coroner Newton indicated that the victim was walking with his head down and may not have heard or seen the train due to inattentiveness while using his cell phone.
Coroner Newton indicated an autopsy was performed and the cause of death was Blunt Force Trauma with the 'manner of death' being ruled as an accident.
The incident is actively being investigated by The Newberry City Police Department and the Newberry County Coroners Office.
The Newberry County Sheriffs Department assisted at the scene and with family notification.
