Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Credit protection company Experian will offer cancellations to South Carolinians who renewed with the company for credit protection.
Last week, Experian began e-mailing customers telling them they could renew their credit protection for a $12 fee.
The company recently decided it would not bid on a new contract with the State of South Carolina to offer free credit protection to citizens affected by last year's massive data breach.
However, the state is still reviewing bids from other companies to continue the free credit monitoring for South Carolina citizens, and many people were not aware of that when they received the e-mail from Experian.
The South Carolina Department of Revenue says people can cancel before the new protection begins, or can get a prorated reimbursement if it had already begun.
