Columbia, SC (WLTX) A 16-year-old was arrested Monday and charged in what authorities are calling a gang-related shooting.
The 16-year-old was charged with murder and is expected to be tried as an adult, according to Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Timmons and additional charges are possible.
The teen is charged in Sunday's shooting death of Amanda F. McKemie, 22, of Gaston. McKemie, was shot in the head while riding in a vehicle with another person.
McKemie was traveling on West Campanella Drive shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, near Farrow Road. The driver told investigators he heard gunfire and saw that his passenger had been critically injured, Timmons said.
The 16-year-old was arrested Monday evening by CPD Investigators and members of the Gang Unit.
CPD investigators believe the shooting was gang-related, and stemmed from an earlier altercation.
"This case is yet another example of how gangs destroy lives," said Columbia interim police Chief Ruben Santiago. "Gang members think they will become notorious by committing crimes when in reality they face significant prison time."
The arrest was made following a Crimestoppers tip.
