Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- People looking to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act and even those just searching for more information ran into hiccups during the process Tuesday.
"As soon as you go on the site there's delays that's happening," said Calvin James, an Outreach Coordinator for the Affordable Care Act. "There's a chat room that you really can go on and chat, that's delayed. There's telephones, even calling into the call center there's a recording now saying that there's gonna be a 15 min delay,"
James works with a group called Team Hope. They are funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration. The seven member team is tasked with providing unbiased guidance through the application process. He says today was also their first day seeing the site.
"We have been funded to do services to educate individuals about the affordable care act and even us as grantees we were not able to even preview what was going on until today," said James.
Marilyn Tavenner, Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says more than 2.8 million people tried to access healthcare.gov since midnight.
She says that is seven times the amount of users on the Medicaid system at any given time.
For James it is a sign that people are looking to see what is out there and get more information.
He wants them to remember that despite delays you still have several months to get educated and make the best decision for you and your family.
"Again it's a six month process for them to really sign up for healthcare, it's that same six month process that they can gain the knowledge also, so be patience and understand that there may be great delays now but next week it may be a lot easier to get on," said James.
If you're interested in signing up you have until March 31, 2014.
If you want your coverage to begin at the first of the new year you will need to sign up by December 15, 2013.
