Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia City council voted on the first reading of what the mayor's salary would be if the strong mayor referendum is passed.
Tuesday night council members decided that the salary wouldn't be any more than $160,000. But they also passed an amendment to give the mayor a salary increase....if the strong mayor referendum is not passed; that salary would be $75,000 a year.
Mayor Steve Benjamin and Councilman Moe Baddorah; who's running for mayor, didn't vote on the salary issue.
Councilman Cameron Runyan said it is important to note that council has the power to decrease the salary at anytime.
"This body still controls the power of the purse and we have the ability not to fund things and not to fund various pieces of budget," said Runyan.
The ordinance must past a second reading before the referendum is voted on by the public on December 3rd.
