Wedgefield, SC (WLTX) -- Two people in Sumter County are charged with unlawful conduct towards a child after a 6-month-old girl was taken to a doctor's office with permanent brain injuries.

Sumter County Deputies arrested Christopher McFadden, Jr., 20, and Brittany Nicole Shapely, 18. Deputies say the incident happened on September 4 through September 5 at a home on Cricket Drive in Wedgefield.

McFadden and Shapely are accused of deliberately avoiding giving their daughter medical treatment. Deputies say the two took the infant to Sumter Pediatrics where doctors discovered the girl had a permanent brain injury. They believe there was an attempted suffocation and the girl suffered a loss of oxygen.

The girl was later taken to Palmetto Health Richland where doctors say they realized the 6-month-old had healed from previous rib fractures.

Shapely and McFadden also face charges of conspiracy after deputies say they tried to cover up the incident.
