Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- Thursday was World Sight Day and WLTX teamed up the South Carolina Lions Foundation to offer free vision and hearing screenings.

The SC Lions Foundation is an organization with a commitment to improving the lives of the citizens of South Carolina by providing vision and hearing health care including basic health screenings, eye surgeries, hearing devices, and optical supplies for the underserved who would otherwise not receive assistance.

Mary Lowman of Columbia was one of the participants in the screenings, she said she couldn't afford this type of testing.

Lowman said, "I am in that boat because I don't have any kind of insurance, no kind of insurance like when you are going to the doctor, I had to go to the doctor the other day."

Gregg Turner, the President and CEO of the South Carolina Lions Charitable Services sees situations like Mary's regularly.

Turner said, "Most people don't realize that general health insurance plans don't cover routine eye and vision examines, they also don't cover hearing examines, so it is important that we offer it to those individuals."

It is services like that the Lions provide serving people that may need a little extra help when it comes to their health.

"It is our goal to make sure that no one goes without the vision and hearing services they need, early detection is the key and we find that most of the time, if you catch it early enough you can correct the problem," said Turner.

Even as the group helped a number of residents on Thursday, Turner hopes others will notice what the Lions are doing on a daily basis, to help our neighbors with some basic care that many us of take for granted.

"You may not know what we do, but the next time you see that logo, think about the vision and hearing that we gave to South Carolina citizens," said Turner.

More than 200 people were screened during the event.
