Columbia, SC (WLTX)- Dozens of police officers are asking Columbia City Council for higher salaries.
During Tuesday's Columbia City Council work session, officers said when you work for the Columbia City Police Department after two years as an officer there are no pay increases.
The starting salary for an officer in CPD with a High School Diploma is $32,120, according to the city website.
An officer with a Bachelor's Degree is $34,368.
Officers said people are leaving the department after two years and less experienced offers are on the force.
"They're leaving after two years do to the fact of lack of pay, lack of merit increases, lack of step programs that many other agencies institute," Joseph Czeladko with Southern States Police Benevolent Association said. "It causes people to lose faith."
The council said they will look for a solution.
