Fairfield County, SC (WLTX) -- Two people in the Winnsboro area are being treated for exposure to rabies.
The Department of Health and Environmental control says the two adults were exposed by a dog that tested positive for the disease.
DHEC says this is the second dog in the state to test positive for rabies in less than a month. Sue Ferguson with DHEC's Bureau of Enviornmental Health Services says three cats have also been diagnosed with rabies this year.
State law requires pet owners to vaccinate their pets yearly against the disease.
According to DHEC there have been 102 confirmed cases of rabid animals this year. That compares to 137 confirmed cases in 2012.
If you believe you have come in contact with a rabid animal, seek medical treatment and report the incident to DHEC. For more information about rabies, you can visit DHEC's website
