Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police and the South Carolina Highway Patrol are searching for a person who crashed a car into a home late Wednesday night.
According to Trooper Bill Rhyne with highway patrol, at about 3:40 p.m. a car was stopped during a traffic safety check point on Bluff road in the Olympia community.
The driver presented identification, Highway Patrol determined that the driver did not have a operator's license and the driver fled the scene.
A trooper from the safety check point went to look for the vehicle and found it in the area. A minute long pursuit followed, but it was called off by the onsite highway patrol supervisor.
A short time later highway patrol was notified by the Columbia Police department of a collision at the corner of Rice and Pickens street and it was determined that this was the driver that had fled the checkpoint.
According to Columbia police, the vehicle hit a home, causing both the car and the house to catch fire. The driver of the car then got out and ran away.
Columbia police and Highway Patrol are actively searching in the area for the person.
