Cayce, SC (WLTX) -- One person's trash could by the key to victims of domestic violence finding their way to a new life.
"For you it might just be the cell phone sitting around, you know you've got a few things on it, you want to take off even though you're not using it anymore, but for that person in that situation that could be their lifesaver," said Lindsey Willard, Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator for Sistercare, a non-profit organization that provides services to battered women and their children.
Williard says your old phone, no matter the age, style, or condition, could help a family during a difficult and risky time.
"The most dangerous time for a woman when she decides to leave an abusive relationship is during that time when she's actually leaving and she's actually decided she wants to get out of there and by donating that used cell phone that cell phone might be truly what saves her life and really gets her out of that situation," she said.
Sistercare works with Shelter Alliance to recycle and wipe clean your donated phones. They then receive funds from the recycling and work with another organization, Secure the Call, to obtain used phones that are given to people looking to get out of abusive relationships.
Willard says the phones are important because a victim may be isolated and unable to communicate with others.
"The abuser truly has control over every aspect in the victim's life and that includes the phone so she may not have an opportunity to go out and get her own cell phone, she may not have one," she said.
That is why she says victims are so grateful to receive these emergency phones.
"Having that cells phone really made them feel safe, and it really helped them when they were afraid that their abuser was gonna come after them and find them, and several of the women they have children, so it's not just the woman's life that he cell phone is saving, their lives and their children's lives," said Willard.
