Asheville, NC -- Traffic backed up in the westbound lanes of Interstate 240 at the Jeff Bowen Bridge this afternoon following a traffic accident in which a police car went off the bridge.
The car landed along Riverside Drive. The incident happened shortly after 1 p.m.
According to CBS affiliate WSPA, the cruiser was driven by Asheville Police Officer Robert Bingaman, and was traveling eastbound when it left the bridge and landed on the ground below.
The vehicle was stabilized and Bingaman was removed and rushed to the hospital. At that time, he was pronounced dead.
Bingaman had been with the department for six years.
