Police Believe Teen's Shooting was 'Unintentional'

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Columbia police say they believe the shooting of a 14-year-old girl Sunday night was unintentional.

According to Public Information Officer Jennifer Timmons, the incident occurred at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Sunday at Latimer Manor, an apartment complex on Lorick Circle.

Police now say they believe a group of juveniles were playing with a gun when it went off. The victim was shot in the chest and is currently listed in critical but stable condition. Officers say she is paralyzed.

A 16-year-old male is charged with unlawful possession of a pistol in connection with the case. Officers say he was acting in a reckless manner by holding the gun before the shooting.

Investigators say he is a validated gang member.

The girl remains to the hospital where she's listed in critical but stable condition. 

The circumstances around the shooting remain under investigation.
