Columbia, SC (WLTX)- Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands celebrating 30 years of hope and healing.
The organization marked the milestone with an anniversary party at 701 Whaley Tuesday night.
"Without these services people are at great risk for depression and a 26 times higher risk for drug addiction or dependency on alcohol, explained Mary Dell Hayes, development coordinator for STSM.
The "founding mothers" were also recognized at the event. Lyn Phillips and Liz Norris are two of the original 6 founders and 3 other women later joined in helping to create what was originally called the Rape Crisis Network.
"When like minded people come together and create a bond together and then create something together, it really is a benefit to the community. It does not ever feel like work, it always felt as though we were the ones given the gift," said Liz.
In 2012, Hayes says Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands provided more than 14,000 services to survivors.
