Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Many fans may not know this, but there is actually a trophy for the winner of the South Carolina - Clemson game and the history of the trophy is because of one fast food restaurant.
Every rivalry game comes with a lot of traditions but one that often times gets overlooked by fans is that this game is a trophy game, for the past 30 years the winner of the USC Clemson game takes home the Hardee's Trophy.
"Hardee's is a great partner with both Clemson and South Carolina and they came up with the idea, whatever school wins let's give them this fabulous big trophy and they get to keep it all year long in their trophy case and it goes back and forth," said Liz McMillan, General Manager for Gamecocks Sports Marketing.
McMillan says the trophy is about 3 feet tall and weighs 60 pounds.
"Of course when you have a football player running around with it they make it look light as a feather but it's a very large and heavy trophy. We had it refurbished about 4 years ago."
In a head to head matchup of Dabo Swinney and Steve Spurrier coached teams, Dabo has won the trophy only once, while Spurrier has won it four times.
While Spurrier wants his team to focus on winning for a fifth straight year....he also hopes the heated rivalry will get a name.
"Maybe we can find a name for it and get the national guys to come look at us a little bit but that's ok."
