Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A controversial plan to do away with the ordinance that prevents bars from being less than 500 feet away from a church was delayed at a Richland County Council meeting Tuesday night.
Councilman Norman Jackson says his plan was misinterpreted by members of the public.
He says if a church is located in a strip mall ...the rules that would prevent a bar from moving next to the church should not apply.
"The intent especially at a shopping mall is that if a developer spends millions of dollars to build a mall and the indented use is to build bars and restaurants and then you have a church that locates in the middle and then that eliminates his entire plan it hurts commerce, it hurts development," said Jackson.
Council voted to send the plan back to the planning department to come up with a more specific plan.
