COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Volunteers are again making sure South Carolina's inmates get at least one gift this Christmas.

The state Department of Corrections said inmates are helping unload holiday care packages Monday that have been assembled for people incarcerated in South Carolina's adult and juvenile prisons.

It's part of the Christmas Packets for Prisoners project, which is co-sponsored by the Southern Baptist Convention and the South Carolina Women's Missionary Union. For nearly 40 years, volunteers from the South Carolina Baptist Convention have been putting together the care packages with items donated from member churches.

Each adult inmate gets items from a pre-approved list that includes toothpaste, toothbrush, soap and candy. They'll also get a pen, notepad, envelopes and a scripture booklet.

Separate packages are put together for Department of Juvenile Justice inmates.
