(Newberry) - Officers with the Newberry County Sheriff's Office and the Newberry City Police Department have arrested 21 people and are searching for five others in connection with the sale of illegal drugs in the county. “This has been a long and difficult investigation,” said Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster. “It is always difficult to infiltrate the tight groups that the people who sell illegal drugs tend to keep, and I am pleased that we have been able to identify these people who have chosen to sell illegal drugs and remove them from the streets of our county.” Shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday, officers from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, Newberry Police Department, the Newberry Office of South Carolina Probation, Pardon, and Parole, the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, and (ATF) Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms began executing fifty five arrest warrants on 26 separate people. “These individuals cause problems not just in their neighborhood, but throughout all neighborhoods,” said Chief Jackie Swindler. “As if selling drugs is not problem enough, those who use the illegal drugs often break into homes and steal things to get money to support their drug habit. It is because of this direct relationship between illegal drugs and other more serious offenses such as property crimes and violent crimes that we concentrate so hard on drugs in our joint efforts.” Both Foster and Swindler stated that this operation was made possible because of the outstanding communication and partnership that make such operation possible. They said that there was no indication that those charged were acting together or as part of a large scale ring. All appearances indicate that each person was acting independently of each other; however, Foster stated that the investigation was ongoing to identify the suppliers of these illegal drugs. Foster also said that more arrests are expected, however, he would not discuss how many additional arrests are expected or when the may occur. According to police records, arrest warrants were issued on the following twenty four people. Those taken into custody were: CLEO BURNSIDE B M (29) 1-28-75 ADDRESS 217 WERTS STREET.
