South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is backing her fellow Republican, Chris Christie, on the bridge scandal that is threatening his political future.
"I've watched my friend Gov. Christie work through a difficult situation today," Haley posted on Facebook. "He did the right thing in taking responsibility in a tough situation. That's the kind of leadership that earned him the huge level of trust he has in New Jersey."
Christie apologized to the people of New Jersey, especially those in Fort Lee, for politically motivated lane closures on the busy George Washington Bridge last fall. He announced Thursday he had fired a top aide, Bridget Anne Kelly, and severed ties with his political ally, Bill Stepien, after copies of e-mails revealing their roles in the payback scheme were disclosed.
Haley is one of the governors that Christie presumably would be helping this year as he begins his chairmanship of the Republican Governors Association. She is facing a tough battle for a second term in South Carolina.
