Sumter, SC (WLTX) - SUMTER, SC (Jan. 16, 2014) - Sumter Police have arrested a man they suspect tried to rob a local bank.
The attempted robbery happened at about 3:53 p.m. at the First Citizens Bank at Washington and Calhoun streets in Sumter.
According to police the man presented a note demanding money to a teller. Although a weapon was not seen, his mannerisms suggested he might have been armed. The suspect then fled without taking any money.
He was seen leaving in a royal blue colored Ford or Mercury.
Franklin R. Johnson, 24 was arrested at about 8 p.m. Thursday on Carolina Avenue. He was walking when he was spotted by patrol officers.
Johnson has been charged with attempted armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
He is being held at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center.
State Probation, Pardon and Parole officers assisted in the arrest.
