Columbia, SC (WLTX) - South Carolina Department of Transportation employees are repairing a section of the Blossom Street bridge damaged in a fatal collision Thursday night.
Crews were on the bridge Friday afternoon constructing a makeshift barrier to replace a hole.
Thursday evening, an SUV collided with the railing on the side of the bridge, then plunged into the Congaree River below. A witness told News19 the vehicle appeared to put on the brakes, skidded, then went off the structure. Previous Coverage: 2 Dead After SUV Goes Off Bridge
Both a man and a woman inside the vehicle died.
Columbia Police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash. They are asking for any witnesses or anyone who may have information about the crash to contact them.
The victim's identities have not yet been released by the Richland County Coroner's office.
