Chapin, SC (WLTX) - Lexington County deputies have charged a teen after they say he had tear gas on Chapin High School's campus.
Coleman Douglas Newman, 17, is charged with unlawfully possessing a controlled substance with the intent to distribute it near a school, possessing marijuana, and carrying a weapon on school grounds.
Deputies say Newman is not a student at Chapin High.
On Thursday, a school resource officer saw Newman in the school cafeteria, then quickly leave the building through a side door. The deputy said he approached Newman when he saw him smoking in the parking lot, which is a violation of school policy.
The officer reported smelling marijuana on the teen, and decided to search Newman and the teen's backpack. Deputies say Newman had marijuana, 45 pills of Klonopin (an anti-seizure drug), and a canister of Sabre tear gas.
Deputies are continuing to investigate why Coleman was at the school.
