Columbia, SC (WLTX) -- The USC campus is getting two new dorms that will house nearly 900 students. Two new dorms will be built behind the Coliseum near Colonial Life arena.
"It just seems like there is always something in the planning stages, anyway," Willie Durkin.
In the four years Thirsty Fellow has been in business, co-owner Durkin has seen a lot of changes.
Soon hundreds of students will be right next door.
"We don't really mind being over here on an island by ourselves because of the lack of competition," Durkin said.
University trustees approved a multi-million dollar deal between USC and Holder Properties.
The larger dorm will be built in the first parking lot behind the Coliseum, bordered by Blossom, Lincoln, Devine and Park Streets.
The smaller one will be directly behind it, bordered by Greene, Lincoln, Devine and Park Streets.
But, Durkin says he's not too sure how much it will affect business.
"I thought we'd get tremendous quantity of business from the fraternity people and sorority kids. And you'd be shocked how little business we actually get from them," he said. "It never hurts to have more activity and foot traffic around your place of business."
It seems foot traffic will be the least of the problems.
That area is under heavy construction.
But, Durkin says he's seen worse when Five Points was being renovated.
"I'm certain I lost business down there, that was really difficult to get in and out of. And if you didn't know your way around or the backstreets around there or you were just visiting Five Points, that created a lot of havoc. This is a minor inconvenience in my opinion," he said.
Durkin says one of his biggest concerns is making sure his parking doesn't get overcrowded.
But, the USC alum is excited for the expansion.
"The growth has just been tremendous," Durkin said.
The West campus development project is a part of USC's Innovista Master Plan.
If everything is approved the larger dorm is set to open by Fall 2015. The other in July 2016.
