2 Vehicle Wreck In Sumter Kills 7-Year-Old

Sumter, SC (WLTX) -- The South Carolina Highway Patrol says one child was killed in a wreck Monday morning one mile west of Sumter.

Trooper David Jones said a 2006 Mazda and a 1995 Saturn collided just after 7:00AM Monday on Highway 76/378 1 mile west of the city of Sumter.

The driver of the Mazda was reported as uninjured, but the driver and two children in the Saturn were hurt in the crash.

Troopers say when the 1995 Saturn crashed, the driver, a 26 year-old Sumter man who was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, was transported to Tuomey Health Care for treatment of his injuries.

One child, a 7-year-old, who was wearing a seatbelt, was trapped in the wreck and died at the scene of the crash.

The second child, an 8-year-old, also wearing a seatbelt, was injured in the crash and was transported to Palmetto Richland for treatment of injuries.

The SCHP MAIT team is investigating the crash, and there is no word yet on the cause of the wreck.
