COLUMBIA (The State Newspaper) - According to The State newspaper, Robert McNair, Jr., eldest son of former Governor Robert McNair and prominent Columbia resident, passed away Tuesday morning at 11 a.m. after a seven-year battle with cancer. He was 60 years old.
This news comes following last year's passing of McNair Jr.'s mother and father and his youngest sister Claudia.
McNair, Jr., nicknamed Bobby, began life in Allendale, South Carolina on January 30, 1947. Early on, he took part in local sports and eventually joined the Air Force during the Vietnam era, rising to the rank of first lieutenant.
After leaving the armed services, McNair, Jr. became a staple in the Midlands community. He balanced a successful business career with involvement in numerous community organizations, including raising funds for the Midlands Chapter of the March of Dimes and serving as chairman of the Board of Directors for the Education Foundation of School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties. Most recently, he became a member of the South Carolina Oncology Associates (SCOA) Board during his struggle with cancer.
McNair, Jr. is survived by his wife Judy and two sons, Robert McNair III and William Thomas McNair of Chaleston, in addition to countless relatives and friends.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church, Boyce Chapel, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 25, 2008. A private family burial with military honors will be held at the cemetery on the family’s historic farm in Berkeley County.
