Richland County (WLTX) - The former football coach at Ben Lippen High School in Richland County has been charged with contributing to the deliquency of a minor.
Thomas Jacob Sawyer, 36, was arrested Thursday.
Deputies say they got a report on September 20 of last year that Sawyer was having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old female student.
According to officers, there were concerns raised about Sawyer's behavior toward the girl.
Investigators determined Sawyer and the girl did not have any kind of sexual relationship. Officers say, however, that the 16-year-old was defying rules at home and school in response to requests made by Sawyer.
On March 22, deputies say they learned that Sawyer, who's no longer with Ben Lippen, was still contacting the girl. Deputies say he gave the girl a cell phone and was text messaging her, and was sending letters to her through other students.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott says the charges came because they say Sawyer was causing the girl to become disobedient toward school and home.
