Sumter, SC (WLTX) - At a time when many companies are cutting back and laying people off, 400 jobs are headed to Sumter County.
Sykes Enterprises has announced plans to move more of their operations to the area.
"Sykes is a global provider of outsourced call center solutions to Fortune 1,000 companies around the globe," explains Stephanie Cetti, the Site Director for Sykes in Sumter.
Wednesday and Thursday, the company took applications for the jobs over at the Sumter Mall, and they'll again look at applicants Friday.
One of those who showed up was Tyra Eghafona. Like thousands of others in South Carolina, she's out of a job, and is looking for a solution. Thursday, she joined the hundreds of others who stopped by the mall.
"I'm just ready for work," she explains. "I'm just looking for something I can hold on to."
"We'd like folks to have strong Internet skills, comfortable using a computer, that sort of thing, as well as customer service skills," says Cetti.
In the last two years, Cetti says Sykes has brought 2,000 jobs to South Carolina--jobs that have incentive for applicants. "I can say it's a very competitive wage scale," Cetti explains.
While people weren't offered jobs on the spot, some, like Eghafona, were sent through initial interviews.
"That's the part I need to get past," Eghafona admitted. "I'm a little nervous about that."
Eghafona remains hopeful that the day was the start of her new career. "I would just love to be able to live and not be so stressed with the economy."
If you missed the job fair application process, there is an office location at the Sumter Mall. Cetti says the entrance faces the parking lot between J.C. Penny and Sears, so people can come in person. They can also apply online. Related link: Sykes Website
