Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Allen University is second, only behind Southern University at New Orleans, with the worst graduation rate in the nation at 6%, according to Washington Monthly magazine's 2010 college rankings.
The rankings are based on 4-year public and private not-for-profit colleges in America.
Allen University spokesperson Melanie Jones disputed the numbers when we called for comment.
"This is not a story we're interested in addressing,"said Jones.
She says the university sent a letter to the editor of Washington Monthly challenging the findings.
Jones says the university has a 19% graduation rate.
News 19 obtained a copy of a letter sent by the university on August 27th to Washington Monthly. In the letter, Allen University does exactly as Jones said, stating their graduation rate is 19% and not 6%.
In the letter, Jones says, "this type of false reporting can and will have negative implications for our current and prospective students, alumni, and supporters."
According to Washington Monthly's dropout factory list, even at 19%, the university would still rank in the top 50 worst graduation rates in the nation.
Washington Monthly defends its data. It says the 19% graduation rate that Allen University is pointing to is not the same year of data used by the magazine.
The magazine also says on June 28, it confirmed with Allen University's Marilyn Young that the 6% graduation rate (13 completers out of 197 students) is accurate.
"Based upon that information, we believe that number to be correct,"said Ben Miller with Washington Monthly.
