CBS Plans 24-Hour Online News Channel

CBS is working to develop a 24-hour online news channel, drawing content from its existing news-gathering resources to court younger viewers.

The plan is in the "early stages" of development and CBS is in talks with Internet companies to form a partnership, CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves told Bloomberg Television Thursday, adding he currently doesn't "have a timetable" for the launch.

"There are already too many players (on cable) for us to start a brand new cable channel," he said. "There's so much information we get every day that doesn't fit into the 22-minute newscast or CBS This Morning."

CBS News president David Rhodes will oversee the project.

The company already operates CBSNews.com but it's a text-driven news site with video clips. The envisioned web-channel will live-stream news, similar to CNN's recent efforts to showcase its content online for users who verify their cable subscription.
