Columbia School Bus Jumps Curb and Strikes Tree

Just after 8:30AM Friday, a Richland School District One school bus carrying Lower Richland High School students jumped a curb and struck a tree Friday morning.

News 19 Producer Alex Luchsinger came upon the scene Friday morning near the intersection of Beltline Blvd. and Kilbourne Road in Columbia.

According to an eyewitness Luchsinger spoke with, the bus apparently topped the curb and struck the tree.

The bus was carrying 30 students from Lower Richland High School on their way to the Heyward Career and Technology Center. None were injured, and the students transferred to another bus.

Richland School District One representative Karen York told News 19 that the bus driver, following the crash, reported having trouble with the brakes on the bus, and it wound up striking the tree. Officials will examine the school bus to determine the exact cause of the crash.
