Corrections Closing Campbell Pre-Release Center

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina is closing one of its prisons.

Corrections Department Director Bryan Stirling tells The Associated Press on Thursday that the Campbell Pre-Release Center is closing.

The Columbia facility opened in 1975 and is a minimum-security prison for male inmates who have served most of their sentences and have the opportunity to participate in work release programs.

Stirling says inmates at Campbell will be moved to other facilities. The work-release and labor crew programs will be transferred to other Columbia facilities.

Stirling says Campbell's officers may transfer to vacancies at other prisons, while others will stay on to work as contraband officers at other facilities on the Columbia complex.

Corrections officials say the rate of repeat offenders dropped from about 31 percent in 2008 to 27.5 percent in 2010.
