Orangeburg Co. Sheriff Warns of Phone Scam Targeting Seniors

Orangeburg County, SC (WLTX) -- The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a phone scam being used in the county this weekend, using the Sheriff's Office name.

Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said an individual is targeting seniors with threats of a warrant being issued for their arrest.  He said the scammer will state that a $500 payment to him will negate the warrant.

Deputies said the caller has been giving potential victims the name of "Davey Williams" and is calling from (803) 310-3988.

Sheriff Ravenell said if you get a call from that number and a person identifying themselves as "Davey Williams," asking for money to negate a warrant, the call is a scam.  Sheriff Ravenell wants to remind people that no charge can be dropped by a simple payment, no matter the amount of money.

If you receive a call from that number, you are asked to call the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office at (803) 534-3550, or call CrimeStoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
